JanMichael Schulist, 74, expected to discuss her heart during a regular checkup with Chanaka Wickramasing, MD, at Eisenhower Desert Cardiology Center. While waiting for “Dr. Wick,” she read a wall poster about chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), in which weakened leg vein valves cause blood to backwash and collect in the legs, leading to varicose veins, swelling, leg pain, skin changes and more.
With a shock, Schulist recognized the symptoms she had suffered for years, and asked Dr. Wick about the possibility of CVI. He ordered an ultrasound, which confirmed she indeed had the condition. Because of her advanced case, Dr. Wick recommended radiofrequency vascular ablation, a minimally invasive procedure to seal her damaged veins.
Since her treatment, Schulist has felt a huge difference in her daily life: “After all the years I suffered with this, I feel like I have new legs,” said.
