Against the Odds: Helping Save a Teen’s Life

Vanessa Rodriguez, patient at Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC)

After a devastating car accident, 17-year-old Vanessa Rodriguez sustained life-threatening injuries. When she arrived at Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC) with multiple fractures, spinal trauma and a brain injury, her future was uncertain.

The medical center’s trauma and intensive care teams launched a relentless effort, working around the clock to save her life. Vanessa spent weeks in the ICU and nearly three months in the hospital, with her mother, Jenny, at her bedside.

After weeks unconscious, Vanessa woke to a new reality. She was told she might never walk again — but thankfully, her journey didn’t end there. With ongoing rehabilitation and physical therapy, she’s now regaining movement and taking assisted steps.

“Severe trauma cases require rapid coordination and highly specialized care,” said Reza Kermani, MD, a general surgeon with AVMC. “Vanessa’s survival and progress speak to the skill of our multidisciplinary teams and her resilience.”
