President's Message

With Gratitude for the Work and Impact of Communities Lifting Communities

I’m writing to share an important update on Communities Lifting Communities (CLC), HASC’s 501(c)(3) subsidiary.

HASC established CLC in 2020 to help hospitals and community partners align their efforts around shared community health priorities. Since then, CLC has brought together hospitals, community clinics, health plans, public agencies and many other community partners around this commitment to advancing health equity and strengthening communities throughout Southern California.

Over the past six years, that work has been shaped by countless individuals and organizations who contributed their time, expertise, resources and passion. Together, they helped build partnerships, elevate community voices and support initiatives designed to improve health and well-being across the region.

However, during that time, the financial environment facing hospitals, foundations and other funding partners has continued evolving. In light of these changes, and following a careful review of CLC’s financial sustainability, the board approved moving the organization to inactive status, with a strategic re-evaluation planned for 2028. This decision reflects the resources available to sustain a separate organization.

While the change marks a significant transition, it’s also an opportunity to recognize what CLC and its partners have accomplished together.

We’re deeply grateful to CLC’s staff and board members, as well as the hospitals, funders, community-based organizations, public agencies and countless collaborators who believed in this work and helped move it forward. The relationships developed through CLC and the spirit of collaboration behind its work have been among its most meaningful contributions.

HASC is also grateful to LaRae Bechmann for her leadership as executive director of CLC and her dedication to the organization and the communities it served. LaRae concluded her time with the organization on Oct. 2, 2026. We thank her for the energy, commitment and care she brought to CLC, and for the important role she played in advancing its mission throughout Southern California. We wish her the very best.

We’re pleased that Daniel Wherley, program manager for CLC, has transitioned to HASC, where he will continue his work supporting the Ventura County Community Health Improvement Collaborative (VCCHIC). Through VCCHIC, hospitals, public agencies, health plans, community clinics, community-based organizations and residents will continue working together to improve health outcomes across Ventura County.

To everyone who has been part of CLC’s journey, thank you. Your partnership, trust and commitment have made this work possible. HASC is proud of what we have accomplished together, and we deeply appreciate the many relationships built along the way.

With appreciation,
George G.
