Webinar

Advancing Geriatric Emergency Care: Best Practices and Accreditation Strategies

Facilitated by UC San Diego Health and West Health
April 24, 2023 | 1:00 - 3:00PM PT

Overview

HASC and West Health invite emergency department (ED) clinical leaders interested in pursuing Geriatric Emergency Department (GED) accreditation to a sponsored educational webinar. In alignment with the Governor’s Master Plan for Aging (MPA) to expand the network of GEDs throughout California, West Health and partners will provide geriatric education tailored for the ED and share key resources for successful GED accreditation application.

In 10 years, California will be home to 10.8 million people aged 60 or greater, nearly twice as many as in 2010. One out of every four Californians will be an older adult. This seismic demographic shift will change every aspect of our lives, from the structures of our families and communities to the drivers of our state’s economy. Because more Californians are living longer, the need is growing for more health care informed by geriatric expertise — yet only about 5% of providers have this training. The state will need a larger health care workforce trained in geriatrics, including Alzheimer’s and all dementias.

In conjunction with the MPA and the West Health Institute, UC San Diego Health’s senior emergency care team is sponsoring these virtual training events to assist departments in pursuing geriatric accreditation. The training will prepare your site to receive GED accreditation, a valuable designation offered by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Who should attend

ED physician champions/medical directors; ED nurse champions

Training topics

  • Geriatric-specific syndromes and concepts relevant to emergency medicine
  • Clinical issues nearly exclusive to geriatric ED patients (e.g., end of life care, dementia, delirium)
  • Unique factors found in older adults for issues common to all ED patients (e.g., trauma in older adults, cardiac arrest care for geriatric patients)

Benefits for hospitals pursuing GED accreditation

  • Decrease return visits to the ED
  • Increase market share
  • Improve staff morale
  • Improve patient experience
  • Better census management
