This workshop provides human resources professionals and managers with a comprehensive overview of the various types of leave available under federal and state law. You’ll learn how to avoid common compliance pitfalls and reduce legal risk for your organization when navigating a leave of absence. In addition, you’ll gain a working understanding of employee rights and responsibilities, and the procedures required to request, approve and effectively manage leave.
Workshop Goals
Following this session, you’ll understand:
The different types of leave available, including FMLA, ADA-related, personal, pregnancy and military, along with state-specific leave laws
Eligibility requirements and how to determine whether an employee qualifies for protected leave
The proper process for requesting and documenting a leave of absence
Manager and HR responsibilities when an employee requests or takes leave
How to handle intermittent leave and the challenges it presents
Return-to-work procedures, including reasonable accommodations
How company leave policies interact and run concurrently with applicable laws
Human resources executives, directors and managers, in-house general counsel and labor relations professionals.

Hannah Sweiss is a partner in Fisher Phillips’s Woodland Hills and Los Angeles offices and co-chair of the firm’s California Class Action and PAGA Group and Healthcare Industry Group. Hannah represents and defends employers ranging from Fortune 100 companies to small businesses. She has been lead counsel in numerous complex wage and hour class action lawsuits, as well as representative lawsuits brought under California’s Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA).
