Zuleyma Santos was just 35 when she was diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy. This form of heart failure can strike in the last month of pregnancy or the first few months postpartum. A mechanical pump implanted by Keck Hospital of USC doctors has given Zuleyma a new lease on life while she awaits a heart transplant. In the meantime, she’s spreading the word that heart disease is the leading killer of women. Read more
